THE IX INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION ON CULTURE AND PEACE
IN GERNIKA 22 – 26 April, 1999

The IX Gernika Convention will have a very special note: Since September 1998 an indefinite ceasefire of the armed actions of ETA has been in effect in the Basque Country and the Spanish State which has cleared the path for peace-building. Society has to participate in this building process and it should also share in the first fruits of peace. We hope that the Convention days will have something of a festive air absorbing some of the joy felt by society – moderated by prudence – in the hope of peace.

Under the main theme PEACEBUILDING, various topics will be discussed:

* Negotiation Processes,
* Consideration toward the victims and their families. Their contribution to peace building,
* Treatment of the prisoners and their families,
* The aspirations, demands and contributions of youth to the peace processed
* The Guiding Ethic toward the Reconciliation Horizon,
* The Universities and Research Centres' Contribution to Peace Building,
* The media in peace building.

FIRE

When all the world appears to be dark,
A flying spark
Can land below a dead tree in the night,
And set alight.

A massive forest with a single gust
Of wind, wind that wouldn't stir the dust,
And when the leafless tree is trapped
In bursts of flame,
The smoking wood takes on another name,
A dying wood, a memory of the past,
That fought the tiny spark until the last.
