Class of 2000 for Abolition 2000
A New Campaign for Students Graduating at the Start of the New Millennium
Abolition 2000 is a global coalition of over 1,000 groups and organisations on six continents actively working together to establish an international treaty by the year 2000 that would set a defined timeline for the elimination of all nuclear weapons.
Abolition 2000 needs student involvement now. A campaign has been started for students graduating at the start of the new millennium called: CLASS OF 2000 FOR ABOLITION 2000. The Campaign was named by Lachlan Forrow, MD President of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship and is intended to bring attention to the issue of nuclear weapons and encourage students to take an active role in their elimination.
Students will be encouraged to join in signature gathering for the International Petition, get a Campus Declaration passed by their Student Government, and get involved in grassroots activities in their own communities. The Campus Declaration is a symbolic statement that can be sent to various influential figures so that they will be made aware of students' opposition to nuclear weapons.
In the "Abolition 2000 Resolution For College Campuses" signatories declare themselves "nuclear free zones" and call for:
* all nuclear weapons to be taken off alert status, for all nuclear warheads to be separated from their delivery vehicles, and for the nuclear weapons states to agree to unconditional no first use of these weapons;
* the governments of all nuclear weapons states to begin negotiations
immediately on a Nuclear Weapons Convention to prohibit and eliminate all
nuclear weapons early in the next century, and to complete these negotiations by the year 2000; and
* copies of this resolution to be distributed among the student body, faculty and administration, as well as local government leaders, U.S. Representative(s), U.S. Senators, and the President.
Abolitionon 2000 asks that students everywhere take the time to contribute to this, important project.
