Green Light for Deep Seabed Explorations
At its August 1997 meeting in Jamaica, the International Seabed Authority gave their approval to the plans, submitted by seven "pioneer investors" to explore the mineral wealth of the deep seabed, in particular in the Central Pacific. The goal of these "pioneers" is to locate economically exploitable deposits of polymetallic nodules – rich in manganese, nickel, cobolts and copper – situated miles below the ocean surface in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
Binding contracts are to be issued by the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority Council to the seven investors. These contracts will cover such issues as training programmes for personnel and protection of the marine environment.
