Water and Life
In August 1997, the South East Mediterranean Project (SEMEP) in cooperation with UNESCO, The National Youth Foundation and the Greek Government arranged its first SEMEP Summer School on the theme 'THE SEA AND US'. Youths from Sister Projects, such as the Blue Danube, the West Mediterranean Project, the Caribbean Sea Project, and the Baltic Sea project were invited to participate in the comprehensive training programme: investigating, observing and identifying species and analysing samples; the pollution of the sea, the seashore and the use of equipment etc.
Participants were also introduced to the history, the archaelogical sites and the artistic aspects of the region.
It was decided at the end of the week together that the theme for the next Summer School in 1998 would be: 'Water And Life', to fit the 1998 International Year of the Ocean.
